Απίστευτα μεγάλη ήταν η ανταπόκριση του κόσμου για την έκθεση «Στάμος: Σειρά Λευκάδα» στην αίθουσα τέχνης «Θεόδωρος Στάμος και στην Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη  η οποία είναι αφιερωμένη στα 100 χρόνια από τη γέννηση του σπουδαίου και διεθνώς καταξιωμένου Λευκαδίτη δημιουργού. Τα έργα που εκτίθενται ανήκουν στις συλλογές του Ιδρύματος Ελληνική Διασπορά και για πρώτη φορά παρουσιάστηκε συνολικά η πλήρης Σειρά «Λευκάδα», έργα που δημιουργήθηκαν στην εποχή της ακμής του ζωγράφου, εμπνευσμένα από την ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα του. Άξιοι επαίνων είναι ο εκ των ιδρυτών του κέντρου διασποράς συλλέκτης έργων τέχνης κος Βασίλης Καλογηράτος, ο δικός μας γνωστός επιχειρηματίας κος Βασίλης Κατωπόδης για την ιδέα του δανεισμού των εν λόγω έργων από το κέντρο διασποράς και για την οργάνωση της έκθεσης καθώς και ο Δήμος Λευκάδας και το Πνευματικό Κέντρο για την άψογη υλοποίηση της ιδέας. Όπως ανέφερε και ο Δήμαρχος Λευκάδας κύριος Χαράλαμπος Καλός στα εγκαίνια πρόκειται για «το σπουδαιότερο εικαστικό γεγονός, με παγκόσμια ακτινοβολία» και αυτό επιβεβαιώνεται και από την προβολή που έχει στα ΜΜΕ της Αμερικής και συγκεκριμένα στην εφημερίδα National Herald. Το ρεπορτάζ αναφέρεται αναλυτικά στην έκθεση, στον μεγάλο δημιουργό και βέβαια στους ανθρώπους που εμπνεύστηκαν και βοήθησαν να στηθεί το σπουδαιότερο εικαστικό γεγονός στην Λευκάδα.

Exhibition Honors Artist Theodoros Stamos on Centennial of His Birth

LEFKADA – The Hellenic Diaspora Foundation with the Lefkada Municipality Cultural Center organized an exhibition in Lefkada on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Greek-American artist Theodoros Stamos (1922-1997).

This exhibition is the first worldwide that honors the abstract expressionist who is a legend in the establishment of contemporary American art internationally. Stamos was one of the youngest painters in the original group of abstract expressionist painters (the so-called ‘Irascibles’), which included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko.

The exhibition, running through October 15, presents 41 works from the Lefkada Infinity Field series which was inspired by the painter’s residence in his father’s place of origin after 1970. The return to his native roots, to the Greek island of Lefkada, was a creative renewal for Stamos.

The Lefkada series was one of his later works and among the most elegant paintings in recent art history. Art critic Theodore F. WolffIt called it “the reconciliation of art with the primal forces of life.”

The head of the organizing committee, Vassilis (Bill) Katopodis said: “This tribute is the least all we Lefkadians could do for one of the world’s greatest artists.”

Due to the success of the exhibition, Katopodis noted that another one will probably be organized in Athens next year and perhaps in New York sometime in the future.

Born on Manhattan’s Lower East Side on December 31, 1922, Stamos was the fourth in a family of six children born to Greek immigrant parents, his father from Lefkada and mother from Sparta. In 1943, prominent art dealer Betty Parsons gave Stamos, then just 21 years old, a solo exhibition at her Wakefield Gallery and Bookshop. She became an important ally and connection to the contemporary New York art world. Though he traveled widely in his adult life, after 1970 Stamos spent most of his time on his father’s native Lefkada. A year before his death, he donated 43 of his works to the National Gallery of Greece.
